DESIGN NAME: Water Reconfiguration
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Agriculture
INSPIRATION: According to news reports, the water level of Dunhuang Crescent Spring Scenic Area has dropped seriously, and there is a risk of completely drying up. We decided to explore the reasons behind the drying up of its scenic spots. The study found that the rough agricultural water use habits seriously affected the water level and found a solution to change this situation to protect the water level of the Crescent Spring.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This planning-scale project mainly slows down the decline of groundwater by improving the water use pattern of residents and reducing water evaporation to protect the Crescent Spring Scenic Area. We plan to transform traditional local agriculture into interactive landscape agriculture, guide tourists into the farmland and increase farmers' income.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In the design planning of the project, visitors can participate in the whole project.
The envisioned participation scenarios are as follows:
1. Tourists can eat, stay and entertain in the residents' courtyard.
2. Tourists can participate in tamarisk planting activities.
3. Tourists can pick fruit and play in specific farmland.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is located in Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, China, which is a famous tourist attraction and an area with an arid climate. Through sustainable agriculture, the project improves traditional agriculture and promotes the development of the tertiary industry. The conditions for improving the existing situation are relatively simple and can be organized spontaneously by the masses at any time.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The daily water usage mainly relies on well water pumped up from underground. Agricultural irrigation draws water from the Danghe River and underground.
The corresponding solutions are:
1. Utilize topography to collect and reuse domestic sewage and rainwater.
2. Collect domestic sewage water and roof rainwater for irrigation.
3. Planting tamarisk along the ditch reduces water evaporation and strengthens the soil.
4. Hard-paved ditches can reduce water seepage during transportation.
5. Add plastic film to crops to reduce water evaporation.
6. Use nozzles to reduce agricultural water consumption and evaporation.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The target of the design is the whole of Dunhuang City.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research background: Dunhuang mainly comes from tourism. A large amount of agricultural water consumption affects the water level of Crescent Lake, and the scenic spot is facing disappearance.
Method: By improving residents' water use methods, reduce water evaporation, slow down groundwater decline, and protect the Crescent Lake Scenic Area.
Result: Tourists engage in interactive farming.
Insights: Local farmers transform from agriculture to the service industry, get better economic returns and protect scenic spots.
CHALLENGE: 1. Find out the reason behind the decline of the water level of the Crescent Spring, which is not only caused by the drought but more by human activities. It is difficult to find an entry point to ensure the development of the tertiary industry by improving the problems faced by the primary sector.
2. Find the means of sustainable agricultural development suitable for local use by consulting much information.
