DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Galaxy

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Photography Artwork

INSPIRATION:
The abstract spirit of the galaxy is reflected in its infinity and eternity. The idea is perfectly complemented by the words of Tagore's poem: "In darkness, one appears as uniform; in light, one appears as manifold". The artist expresses human imagination and awe at the complexity and diversity of the Milky Way system by capturing the texture and form of the metallic sculpture in black and white photography.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The relationship between metallic materials and the Galaxy is demonstrated through texture, shape, and light, highlighting the similarities. Meanwhile, the reflection of metallic materials and the starlight of the galaxy can be highlighted through black-and-white photography. By showing the complexity and diversity of the galaxy system from different perspectives, it also encourages abstract conceptual thinking and contemplation about the universe.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The microstructure and macroscopic form of metallic materials may inspire our thinking of the Milky Way system. The galaxy is viewed as a massive system where various celestial bodies and regions interact with each other, and metallic materials can also be seen as a small system where molecules and atoms are interacting and changing. The artist creates a metal sculpture and uses photography to abstract the physical object and embody the spiritual concept in this series of photographic works.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The planning took nearly half a year of preparation, three days of shooting and around two weeks of post-production.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Metallic substances have played an important role in the evolution of the galaxy and human civilization. In the universe, metals are produced through stellar nucleosynthesis and accumulate in the galaxy over time, constantly changing. This series of photographic works uses the shapes of metallic substances as a metaphor to represent the structure and evolution of galaxies, their density and distribution, revealing the richness and diversity of the universe.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was to capture the abstract spirit of the galaxy by photographing physical metallic objects. This series of works attempts to represent the technique of Pictorialism photography. The artist must create a metal sculpture first and then photograph it in a black-and-white space and with a specific light source in the studio, avoiding any objects casting shadows on the mirror-polished metal sculpture to creating pure light trails and points, conveying abstract associations of the galaxy.
