DESIGN NAME: Light on Lives
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp
INSPIRATION: Magnus Berggren, a materials engineer at Linkoping University, said this in a New York Times article:"Today, the most natural way to convert the chemical energy of a tree is to burn it, but maybe we could actually gently tap out some of the energy without killing it,". I think we as designers should do something to apply this bold but wonderful idea.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Have you ever thought that plants could one day be used to generate electricity?
“Light on Lives” is a night light powered by microalgae.
Microalgae is one of the most suitable plants for power generation. The microalgae as a power generator does not generate much electricity, but the daily storage of electricity is perfect for a night light. For this lamp, the plant is the source of electricity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in 2022 in Germany, and was exhibited in Milan during Milan Design Week in April 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The light bulb contains a ML2032 rechargeable battery, which is sufficient for LED use. Six test tubes/units of microalgae connected in series will have just the voltage required to charge this ML2032 battery. The reason I used test tubes as a design element was because I wanted to show the contrast between labware and daily products to let people reflect on and value the possibilities of the idea of plant-based power generation.
