DESIGN NAME: Fu Zao
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Soap
INSPIRATION: Designers have observed some phenomena in the temples regarding blessings: wish-granters burn all candles with a wish written on it, hoping it would come true; and people touching the undulating lucky words on temple walls or objects, a touch that helps them form a concrete tactile perception of "luck" that they believe can be transferred to their hands and bodies through touch. After visiting a temple, people often want to take the blessings they prayed for back into their daily lives.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: FU ZAO is a soap for blessings in daily lives.Asians touch the luck inscriptions to get fortune, and praying for wishes to come true by burning the incense with wishes written on. lncense ash has a religious meaning of blessing and can be used for cleaning. So designers recycled the ash into soaps in the form of a prayer hanging with a Chinese character meaning fortune. Hanging FU ZAO by the sink makes washing hands sacred. By touching it everyday, the word blur and the fortune remain in hands.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can hang it by the sink or on the wall in the bathroom and use it when you need to clean your hands or other body parts.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Hangzhou, China in January 2023, continued in Chongqing in February and has been in production ever since.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Designers first printed the finalized soap shape with a 3D printer and then used silicone to create a model that could be used for injection molding. To make the soap, designers use vegetable oil mixed with a solution of alkali for the saponification reaction, add the soap solution to the Incense ashes, mix it thoroughly and then inject it into the silicone model. The colour of the soap is derived from natural plant extracts.
