| DESIGN NAME: Opal PRIMARY FUNCTION: Memory-storing Speaker INSPIRATION: Everyone has music that is associated with specific places, times, and people. Nowadays, people place great emphasis on their quality of life, enjoy traveling, and frequently use their mobile phones to capture both significant and insignificant daily events. However, there is no existing product that can make it more convenient for them to organize and recall these memories, which is why we designed this speaker to assist them in doing so. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Opal is an audio system designed to store memories. Inspired by the concept of a time machine, its retro design evokes a sense of nostalgia and symbolizes its ability to transport users back in time. By connecting to a mobile phone, users can record the places they have visited, the photos they have taken, and the music they have listened to, allowing them to revisit their memories with a multisensory experience that stimulates both sight and sound. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The device will display the places you have visited in the past, and you can click on the locations you want to remember. Based on the selected location, the device will display the photos and videos taken in that place, as well as suggest and play music that matches the atmosphere. In standby mode, Opal also features a recall and reminder function. It will randomly display past photos to encourage user engagement with the device. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2022 and finished in February 2023 in Taiwan. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main material used is plastic, which has a bright surface treatment. Some versions may use metal and leather to enhance the product's texture and tactile feel. The device includes two full-range single speakers and a 10.2-inch LCD screen. The software is equipped with AI photo detection, which automatically matches photos with appropriate music. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Length 330mm*Width 130mm*Height 190mm TAGS: memory, speaker, music, picture, record, time machine, memory-storing, interaction RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Based on the investigation of the group of 30-50-year-olds who pursue quality of life and enjoy recording their lives, actual interviews are conducted to sort out the user persona, and then develop product positioning, functions, and usage flow to create a memory audio that meets their needs. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is designing an intuitive interface and creating a sympathetic shape for this product. The meaning behind OPAL may represent memories and precious value, just like precious gemstones. Therefore, naming the product as Opal aims to showcase the beauty and preciousness of the product through this name. |
