PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Forcep
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for the laparoscopic forceps came from addressing issues such as long wait times for surgeries, patient anxiety, high dexterity required for complex procedures, and the need to reduce recovery time. Soft robotics and snake motion research and control models influenced the design to create a versatile and efficient device, reducing the number of incisions and improving patient outcomes. The result is a flexible, multi-functional device with superior accuracy and control.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Laparoscopic Forceps is a versatile medical device with interchangeable forceps heads, a built-in camera and LED, and a suction and irrigation system. Its onboard display allows for better motion-to-display synchronization, improving accuracy and control. It reduces the number of holes required in the body, compared to other forceps designs making it a unique and innovative solution for laparoscopic surgery.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The laparoscopic forcep is a versatile surgical instrument used in minimally invasive procedures. It incorporates interchangeable forcep heads, a flexible shaft actuator, a suction and irrigation system, and a battery-powered display screen. This allows for precise and controlled movement, reduces trauma and scarring, and lowers the risk of complications. The forcep is durable and efficient, with advanced production technology and high-quality materials.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project brainstorming started in 2019 and the perfect proposed design solution was prepared by 2022 in Davis, California.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The laparoscopic forcep utilizes advanced tech and high-quality materials for durability, precision, and efficiency. It has a medical-grade stainless steel body for the gripping claws, specialized plastic polymers for interchangeable heads, and ultra-thin wires with reinforced polymers for the flexible shaft actuator. The suction/irrigation system uses a mini pump of high-quality plastics/metals. The battery and display screen use electronics for long-lasting power and a clear display. It works on AC/DC and is optimized for superior performance, reliability, and safety.

Then the forceps work on DC and AC voltages the rechargeable battery lasts about 2.5-3 hours. All components are stored in a lightweight ABS plastic box for easy carry.

CHALLENGE: The hardest part of designing the laparoscopic forcep was balancing functionality, usability, and safety. It incorporated features such as suction, irrigation, flexible shaft actuators, and ergonomic design for complex procedures. Through researching existing instruments and collaborating with medical professionals, multiple design iterations optimized functionality and safety while considering manufacturing capabilities. This complex process required creativity, technical expertise, and collaboration to meet the needs of surgeons and patients.
