DESIGN NAME: Wanderland
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Knitwear Design
INSPIRATION: This experimental knitwear collection is inspired by Jungmin's mystic imaginative world that she dreams of running away to. When developing the garments, the designer immerses herself into the imaginative native world of unseeable entities that aroused her curiosity of the unknown. This raw, uncertain imaginary world is given birth from the unreleased and shackled creative energy during times of restriction and isolation from covid pandemics. In this fantasy world, where Jungmin herself is the explorer and adventurer, She is intrigued by unprecedented organic forms and raw instinctive gestures of a variety of newly discovered organisms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jungmin's textile work is an abstract manifestation of her desired fantasyland. This knit sculptures strive to push the boundaries of knitwear through craft, extensive details and creative applications of colors. She develops textiles from scratch, incorporating her unique sense of colors and diverse use of fibers to materialize her artistic fantasyland. The soft knit textiles are naturally hugging the body and draping asymmetrically. The dynamic textures and organic patterns with exposures tend to express the growth and movements of the organisms.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Through different materials and textures, the design delivers diverse tactile experiences for the wearer and invite them into the fantastical nature of textiles. The wearers feel alive and expressive by experiencing these garments.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in Rhode Island, USA in September of 2021 and was completed in May of 2022. It was then captured in New York at Spark Studio.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each piece of garments is crafted on a knitting machine with different knitting techniques and fully fashioned that creates zero waste. The process of crafting is intuitive and spontaneous that gives freedom for creativity and internal reflection. There is no any fixed patterns or rules in her practice, but she rather focuses on arbitrary intuitions. The materials that are mainly used are natural wool and mohair for soft textures combining with light weighted yarns such as silk ; she plays with different gauges and weights of yarns to create an unexpected outcome of contrasting textures.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The garments are made in women's size 2 - 4.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The initial visual reference is the microbial world. The designer researches on microscopic viruses by looking at different organisms under the microscope. She is captivated by their abstract shapes, exotic textures, and instinctive gestures which are translated into her textile work.
CHALLENGE: It takes a lot of time, patience and concentration to knit fabrics. The yarn can rip all of sudden or if you make the wrong count or use the wrong yarn, you have to start again from scratch. The entire process is a negotiation with uncertainty and the unexpected, but that is a beauty of machine-knitting that you never fully know how the result will turn out.
