DESIGN NAME: The Number 335
PRIMARY FUNCTION: White Wine Package Design
INSPIRATION: This is a white wine packaging design with the theme of the famous Dunhuang murals in Northwest China. Its goal is to promote mural culture. I use original calligraphy fonts, illustrations, and professional shooting skills to restore the connotation of Dunhuang's local culture to a large extent. The name of the wine is inspired by the most famous cave No. 335.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The goal of this white wine packaging design is to help more people understand China's mural culture. The illustrations' characters are based on the original cave murals, making the ancient paintings more subtle and approachable. Furthermore, the illustration blends the cave murals with the centuries-old local wine culture, allowing viewers to appreciate the vibrant ancient civilization.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The white wine is served in clear glass bottles. Pale yellow wines go perfectly with the earthy tones and the subtle red and blue labels. The illustrations faithfully replicate the murals of the grottoes in front of people through design and reinterpretation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This product was started in June 2022 and was finished in September 2022.
Pasadena, CA, USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After experimenting with 8 kinds of label materials such as litho paper, matte paper, and high-gloss paper, I decided to use the recycled pulp as a more environmentally friendly material to make this white wine paper label.
It reduces material costs and minimizes waste of single-use packaging such as labels. The special texture of the recycled paper can produce the same or even better texture as high-grade paper through machine pressing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Package size 5.5inch,2.5inch, bottle height11inch, diameter 3inch

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Mogao Grottoes, also known as the Thousand-Buddha Caves, is a series of 500 temples located 16 miles southeast of Dunhuang, Gansu Province, China. This oasis can be found near the Silk Road's religious and cultural crossroads. These grottoes may also be known as the Dunhuang caves. Miles of stunning wall paintings, over 2000 statues, exquisite works on silk and paper, and thousands of old manuscripts, including poems and prayers, are just a few of its treasures.
After many experiments with various materials, the handmade paper material that best resembles the grotto texture was chosen as the final label.
CHALLENGE: I put a lot of thought into the materials I used. One of the challenges I've always had was finding textured paper that didn't interfere with the readability of the illustrations. The decision to make the pulp by hand became a relatively correct one. This not only allows me to better control the flatness of the paper, but it also allows designers to feel the production process.
