As the largest optical telescope in space, its high resolution and sensitivity allow it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Near-Infrared Camera photograph of the Pillars of Creation, elephant trunks of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, in the Serpens constellation, some 6,500–7,000 light-years from Earth.
