| DESIGN NAME: Legal Alien Passport PRIMARY FUNCTION: Document INSPIRATION: The "Legal Alien Passport" is a thought-provoking design that aims to promote empathy and understanding towards immigrants who face complex challenges when adapting to a new culture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The "Legal Alien" explores the challenges faced by immigrants adapting to a new culture. The passport design features a non-linear structure with inner and outer sections. The outer section highlights bureaucratic hurdles with a linear design and stamps expressing barriers. The inner section uses a curvy and psychedelic color scheme to evoke a sense of displacement. Users can engage with the design by completing blank stamp pages and learning about immigrant experiences. Overall, the design promotes understanding and compassion in a globalized world. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: People can interact with the object by filling in the blank pages with stamps that depict the experiences of immigrants, which can be difficult to read and challenging to place correctly. This is intentionally designed to evoke the frustration and obstacles immigrants face. By engaging with this object, people can gain a deeper understanding of immigrant experiences and cultivate greater compassion towards them. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: - SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 88.75mm x 125.75mm / Printed on paper TAGS: inclusive design, korean, community, empathy, understanding, immigrants, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design research used a qualitative methodology with a design-driven approach to explore the challenges faced by immigrants adapting to a new culture. Participants were immigrants from diverse backgrounds, including Korean immigrants residing in the United States. Research tools included design probes, observation, and documentation, as well as co-creation activities to generate insights and design directions. The "Legal Alien Passport" design promotes inclusivity and diversity and encourages dialogue and understanding, contributing to a more empathetic and socially responsible approach to design. CHALLENGE: One of the hardest parts of this design activity was ensuring that the design accurately and sensitively reflected the experiences of immigrants. It was important to avoid stereotypes and generalizations and to recognize the unique experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the design had to effectively communicate the message of promoting empathy and understanding towards immigrants while remaining visually engaging and appealing. Striking a balance between these factors required careful consideration and collaboration with participants and stakeholders throughout the design process. Lia, a Youth Representative to the UN Department of Global Communications, uses design to make a positive impact in the world. She bridges cultural divides, fosters empathy, and promotes connectivity through her designs. Lia believes good design can bring people closer and is always exploring new ways to innovate and push boundaries. |
