Entering the World of Music

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Packaging Design

INSPIRATION:
Inspired by vintage vinyl records, every piece of discs can be picked up in an utterly ritualistic way, and finally bound to a vintage book that makes it easy to flip through like a book. The track information is directly printed on “record bag” that makes you even more focused on music.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This compilation album with 109 musical pieces is presented by NCPA Classics, the music label of the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Its appearance retains the dignified and firm feel of classical music, bright colors and distinctive letters are contrasted with classical music draws listeners to “approach” it and “get into” the world of music.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The record set contains 109 music pieces in 7 CDs which are assorted into seven moods: "peaceful and quiet", "beautiful and pleasant", "refreshing and lively", "vivid and exciting", "exciting and uplifting", "tender and lyrical", "deep and touching". The record is tucked in the middle of two pages in the form of 3D disc. Taking out record is an interesting process.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Chinese and English letters are innovatively designed, strokes are cut out and combined on round disc to make reading comfortable, and the vivid font wipes out the stereotyped serious impression of classical music. The good finish, premium paper, and innovative font design would get listeners excited. Each disc bears a unique color.

The record set measures 165mm wide x 230mm high x 65mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Some unique visual elements bring listeners closer to the beauty of elegant music. With efforts made to study the packaging design of classical music records and analyze material, typesetting, font, design preferences, process and binding, the designer devises a special way of taking out record.

CHALLENGE:
This compilation album takes in Prof. Zhou Haihong’s musical psychology theories including “what music needs to know", "what music needs to be understood in the right way" and “synesthesia”, and the works recommended by more than 100 western composers. How to agree with the musicians on a subjective and personalized thought is a challenge to the binding package design. Every idea doesn’t come up at will, but conveys the charm of music to listeners in a unique form.
