DESIGN NAME: Flames in Moonlight
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Installation Art
INSPIRATION: 'Sulfuric fire fishing' is a centuries-old fishing tradition that is disappearing. Local fishermen in Jinshan use flame light to catch fish by lighting bamboo torches to attract the light-seeking bluestripe herring and then use fish nets to catch them after they jump out of the water. To express the soon-to-be-lost fishing method, the artist presents the symbols of fishing to the audience through concrete imagery, transforming the centuries-old culture of sulfuric fire fishing into the seal of Jinshan seashore.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The artist refers to three important elements in the fishing process: bamboo torches, fire, and tides, and translates the three symbols into an artwork. The work uses bamboo weaving to echo the impression of bamboo torches and combines the concepts of 'fire' and 'tide'. The bamboo weaves from the bottom to the top, from organized to chaotic to express the physical patterns of flame and light scattering, and then the fire is expressed on the beach through light and shadow. In the middle of the work, the 'moon' symbol representing the tide is installed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The artwork and the event attracted many visitors. When visitors view a natural bamboo artwork growing from the beach, they become curious and learn about the centuries-old fishing tradition of the Jinshan area. The artwork remains in place after the event, along with the breeze and sunlight. It was born from nature, so it naturally stayed. It provides shade and rides for those who play on the beach while responding to the images of fishing boats and schools of fish leaping out of the water to show the wonderful traditional culture of the area.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in July 2022 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the early days, fishermen used to light bamboo torches to attract schools of fish, so the fire symbols in this work are represented by bamboo. In the daytime, it looks like a school of fish jumping out of the water, and at night, the shadows under the light seem like torches burning, echoing the bamboo torch imagery. The internal structure is made of steel bars to support the artwork on the sandy beach base firmly. The seating area for resting is made of a smooth bamboo surface to prevent the audience from scratching when interacting with the artwork.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The work is 7.5 m(L) x 5 m(W) x 2.5 m(H), woven in the site. The sculptural form of the moon symbol within the fire symbol is created from the direction of the land facing the sea. The symbols of 'fire' and 'moon' symbolize the elements of 'sulfuric fire' and 'tide' respectively, representing the life of fishermen fishing with the tide and the relationship between people and water.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In an exhibition of light and shadow art, 'Flames in the moonlight' combines the concept of fishing with fire and tide, using symbols to express the impression of fire. The bamboo weaving resembles a fire in the daytime and fish flying in the night. The moon representing the tide is a place for the audience to rest and enjoy the sea view. The project is an art piece shaped by natural materials. The symbols express traditional culture and allow the audience to experience the charm of nature, the relationship between water and human, and the industrial glory of Jinshan.
CHALLENGE: What the design team had to overcome during the process were the venue and time. To ensure that every audience could sit safely in the resting area, the structure had to be strengthened. In addition, since the work was woven on site and it was the hottest time of the year, the hot sand baked the team members. But even though they were sweating, they still finished the work perfectly.
