DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Photosynthesis

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Exhibition

INSPIRATION:
From the curatorial theme of light and shadow and continuing with the same spirit, what kind of products can be generated from light and shadow and the surrounding environment? This event incorporates the concept of 'photosynthesis'. When plants are exposed to light, they will perform a series of organic behaviors, just like the visitors who come to Jinshan and have a series of interesting interactions with the mountains, the sea, and the streetscape.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The scope of the event is the entire Jinshan District. There are four exhibition areas, including the Juming Museum in the mountains, the Zhongjiao Bay International Surfing Base on the beach, the Cherry Blossom Park in the community, and the Yulu historical trail in the fishing village. The different types of Jinshan District combine lighting, projection mapping, and art installations to extend the traces of light in Jinshan and deepen visitors' impressions of the district.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The biggest impact of the event on visitors is that they have a better understanding of the culture and characteristics of Jinshan, and it has created a new art event for the local community. In the second and third years, the design team continued to undertake the local government's North Coast Light and Shadow Art Events. In this way, the Jinshan District and even the surrounding North Shore area continue to attract visitors after the event.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in August 2020 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The four areas show the characteristics of the event with different themes: Night Banquet: Projection mapping allows artworks and cuisine to interact with light and shadow in the night. Floating Light: Artists are invited to create artwork on-site to evoke different looks of light. Sailing: In the Yulu trail, which used to be an essential route for fishing, the story of the old street is revived with interactive works of light and shadow. Flower Melody: The artwork and projection mapping in Cherry Blossom Park attract visitors to downtown Jinshan to experience the culture and beauty of the area.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The scope of the event is the whole Jinshan District. The travel time between the four areas is about 10 minutes. The exhibition area presents light and shadow in a variety of ways, with projection mapping, artwork, interactive experiences, photo area, etc., which can satisfy every visitor's different view on art, while also covering shopping and dining. After experiencing the entire route, visitors can get a thorough understanding of the culture and story of Jinshan and enjoy the beauty of Jinshan from day to night.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Jinshan is one of the most popular attractions in Taiwan. However, tourists often visit Jinshan only during the daytime, so the design team planned a light and shadow show as a night event. When a plant is exposed to light, it will photosynthesize to produce organic matter. The exhibition has four areas: 'Night Banquet', 'Floating Light', 'Sailing' and 'Flower Melody'. The light, projection mapping, and art installations are combined with the local landscape to show the night appearance of mountains, sea, and street scenes.

CHALLENGE:
The purpose of the event is to promote the characteristics of Jinshan and the economy. The scope of the event is so large that the team must rely on the help and support of the local people. In addition, each region has a rich history and culture, so the research must be very well done. Finally, the process and experience of visitor participation had to be taken into consideration, so linking the four exhibition sites through exhibits and stories was the most challenging part of the planning process.
