DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Horatio Street

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential House

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for this apartment came from the firm's previous project, known as the Jewel Box. The design is a refined version of the earlier project with a distinct twist of materials and colors, making the space minimal but powerful and displaying a comfortable yet innovative design. Though inspired by a previous design, this apartment has discovered its distinct voice and has made another impactful splash in the firm's portfolio and the architectural world.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The New York City apartment emphasizes that bigger isn't always better. The apartment is a safe haven designed for the client who values intimacy. The bed-chamber is an independent volume floating within an otherwise open space. The apartment features original oak floors and traditional paneled walls. The kitchen is small but decadent, and the small-scaled bathroom features marble floors. The result is an apartment with architectural details that offer a variety of experiences.

NAME:
Messana O'Rorke

PROFILE:
Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O’Rorke in New York City, Messana O’Rorke is renowned for crafting spaces of sublime restraint and ethereal beauty. Their process utilizes a rigorously thoughtful palette of materials orchestrated in an architectural language of distilled boxes, blocks, and containers that emphasize the qualities of space itself rather than the things that fill it. The apparent simplicity and serenity of Messana O’Rorke’s designs belie the astonishing richness and variety of the experiences they nurture. The architects’ projects span a wide spectrum of residential and commercial assignments in multiple geographies—city, suburb, mountain, desert, ocean. Yet even as they adapt their fundamental design vocabulary to address differences in program and context, Messana O’Rorke’s signature remains unmistakable in the ways they carve space and light. Their designs simultaneously foster both contemplation and invigoration, repose and action. There is no straining for theatrical effect, no tortured architectural calisthenics, simply a search for order, clarity, and beauty.
