DESIGN NAME: Zen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The original layout was narrow, and the walkways were not smooth, so the client wanted new planning for children to play and run around freely. To achieve the client expectation, the designer takes a wabi sabi style as the theme, using natural walnut color and architectural concrete walls with light and shadow techniques to create a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. Moreover, a collection and display wall is set to the side of the study.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The space limitation and rigid and closed layout affect the flexibility and usage of space. The designer cleverly aligned the sofa with the TV wall and moved the TV wall back to increase the depth of the living room. The study room, which is separated from the living room by a wall, has a smooth and rectangular-ambulatory plane that allows the children to run freely between the living room and the study room. In addition, the dark walnut color of the living room is continued, and the wall of the study room is decorated with incense and other Buddhist items to create a resting place for the client to meditate and chant.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This project with minimalism as its core, and perfect storage is the key element. Apart from the large storage cabinets and vista cabinets in the public area, the designer also installed many hidden storage cabinets in the private area. The separate dressing room in the master bedroom is converted from the second bedroom to be an extension of the master bedroom. The dressing room is separated from the master bedroom by a hidden sliding door, which maximizes its storage.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in May 2022 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The designer uses low saturation colors to echo the wabi-sabi aesthetic. The choice of materials, for example, the rough and minimalistic texture of the architectural concrete wallpaper, the cool gray, and the wood, creates a pure and calm tone. Marble was used as the wall surface, but later water-resistant, fireproof, and dirt-resistant faux marble is adopted to echo the color tone on the back of the bookcase.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project has an area of 69.4 square meters, with three bedrooms, a living room, and a dining room. This layout made the three separate rooms small and cramped. So, the designer makes a significant renovation to change the second bedroom, which is next to the living room, into an open-plan study room. The concept of the rectangular ambulatory plane is used to knock down the two walls of the study room and to form a smooth walkway. The second bedroom was transformed into a study so that the hallway originally connected to the master bedroom became a usable space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Walking into this space is like walking into a forest for meditation. The reflection of incense in the foyer purifies the mind, while the soft glow from light strips in the living room blurs the boundaries with the reflection of gray and light walnut colors, echoing the Zen theme. The designer transforms the original layout to create an inseparable relationship between the client and the residence in a 3-bedroom, 1-living room, and 1-dining room space. Meanwhile, the separate study room opens both sides of the hallway in a rectangular - ambulatory - plane, allowing children to run freely around the room.
CHALLENGE: The challenges of this project are the lack of depth in the living room and the low ceiling, which caused a strong sense of oppression. To solve these two problems, the designer switched the position of the sofa and the TV wall by relocating the TV wall to the study. In his way, the depth of the living room is increased to 320cm. In addition, the original air conditioning ducts on the beam above the TV wall are moved to the window. Since the original ceiling was relatively low, the designer make use of light and colors to change the visual perception to raise the height of the ceiling.
