DESIGN NAME: Powderbox
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair and Stool
INSPIRATION: The chairs design is arguing for interactive furniture thereby involving the user actively on several levels. Mathematics is a source of inspiration that drives this design as a simple enabler for the interchanging pillows that give numerous combinations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The inspiration for the chair stems from a very simple mathematical exercise - with 30 loose pillows that are inserted into the back and the seat of the chair, it is possible to have 1740 combinations.
The chair is not conceived as a bland design, a closed form. Among the possible variations, the user is invited to change the identity-creating pillows and design their personalized chair.
The pillows can be turned and changed. The huge amount of combinations led to the idea of inviting the user to be active in the design process.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The aesthetic comes from the powder box. When the box is closed, it's a stool, when the box is open it's a chair.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started as an idea in 2008 and has been updated and reworked in 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Pillow: Various materials - reused fabric, embroidery and different prints on cloth.
Plastic support: Vacuum shaped recycled plastic
Steel structure: Ø9 mm sandblasted steel round section bent into the shape of the legs.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The diameter for the top 37 cm and the height is 47 cm as a stool and 84 cm when opened.
The chair is vacuum shaped reused plastic, but later reworked with sustainable materials. As a whole, the chair is sustainable because it can be easily updated rather than being discharged.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Customisation and personalisation is the name, and in recent years the trend has been natural and dedicated to the home. And which is concretised here in a piece of design that is personal and all-own.
The idea is that it should last until it can be mass-produced in the sense that it is unique, being artwork.
CHALLENGE: As an experience, the design lies in the difficulty that is to challenge the aesthetic value in order to embrace diversity. As designers - the users can now put together their own story and aesthetic preferences - by composing pillows in the chair.
All is made real by including pillows with references to contemporary art. Despite several attempts within the design industry, it's not possible to create design to please everyone, since the aesthetic taste is not based on science.
