PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Baby Blankets With Puzzle

INSPIRATION:
Early childhood education plays an essential role to echo the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 < Living on Land> According to Montessori educational philosophy, the form of puzzles and pastes can develop children’s hand-eye coordination and independence ability, enhance the awareness of preschoolers and establish the concept of sustainable development goals.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The biggest highlight of this product is to combine the form of puzzle with the three major ecosystems on earth, in order to cultivate children’s awareness of environmental protection and the ability of hand-eye coordination from the concept of maintaining eco balance. Parents could explain the significance of environmental protection and guide children to remove 2D plush toys which will improve the patience and focus attention of children, and enhance their consciousness towards environment.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is a blanket design which has simple puzzles made with plush animals. Parents can explain the significance of environmental protection while accompany with children by telling stories, and make them understand that forest, ocean and wetland are important to human. At the same time, children can fit in the scene and move the 2D plush toys into corresponding places. The different touch senses of fabric materials could enlighten and enhance children’s contact ability and hand-eye coordination.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The idea was firstly constructed in the early of 2022. After creating a large amount of sketches and searching studies of different fabrics for a better outlook and function, a prototype was made in May. Since then, the product was improved with adjustments towards small flaws and added with more details to reach the balance of ideals and physical objects.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Material: cotton fabric, cotton Manufacture method: Hand sewing, car sewing, thermal transfer printing Baby blanket is consisted of A side and B side. The patterns on A side adopts with thermal transfer printing method; three different 2D plush animals are made with their images related materials which enable user to recognition easily through vision and touch. B side is made of 3D bean wool fabric which creates a delicate balance between softness and smoothness.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research type: United Nations sustainable development goals, Montessori education concept Research objectives: To inspire preschool children's understanding of sustainable goals. To enhance children’s touch sense ability and hand-eye coordination through feeling different fabric materials. Methods: Fabric analysis, toy type analysis, color analysis, infant education purpose analysis. Data collection and research tools adopted: market research on products for infants and young children aged from 2-4 years old, and the cognitive development of children. Research tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Rhino, Keyshot.

CHALLENGE:
Presenting the original design goals into the product through the design “language” is one of the difficult parts. In order to bring delicate balance between the multiple functions towards puzzle, Montessori education concept and sustainable development goal, the overall picture needs to be coordinated by adopting the suitable forest theme elements and matching colors which were adjusted constantly during the whole design and manufacturing process.
