DESIGN NAME: Rond
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Circulating Pointe Shoe
INSPIRATION: Most of ballerinas are required to use pointe shoes even in early ages. Due to heavy practices and rehearsals, the numbers of pointe shoe disposal increases as well. Once they are broken, dancers need to change to another new pair and throw the old one since they cannot be used anymore. Moreover, pointe shoes are expensive but still require constant buying due to their short life. It shows clearly that current pointe shoes are not sustainable in terms of money and environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Rond is a circular design pointe shoe made of recycled waste material. It has a mobile application system that encourages users to circulate the shoes by reusing and recycling the parts, avoiding them to go into landfills. The shoe support is made of recycled polycarbonate plastic waste. It is not attached to the shoe permanently. The outer sole and the shoe fabric use recycled tire waste and plastic bottle waste material. Rond is easy to disassemble and can be reused for the next production.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Rond solves the sustainable issues of current pointe shoes by using sustainable design strategies and circular economy principles to it. It uses recycled waste as the main material. Unlike today's pointe shoes, Rond is designed to be always circulated. Rond also provides a mobile application that involves users returning the used shoe or parts if they are broken. The system ensures that no pointe shoe waste is generated.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been started in May 2022 until now. It is still an ongoing process. Currently, we are looking for investors to fund this project so we can develop and realize Rond.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The shoe support which is the combined toe box-shank is made of recycled polycarbonate plastic waste. It is not attached to the shoe permanently, leading to easy recycling if it is broken hence, it wouldn't damage the whole shoe since dancers will purchase the support only. The outer sole and the shoe fabric use recycled tire waste and pet bottle waste material respectively. Rond is easy to disassemble thus it can be reused for the next new pointe shoe production.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The 3D model has dimensions of 90 mm x 45 mm x 230 mm for the shoe fabric and the support. The ribbon will have a length of 600 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The current pointe shoes are still linear which people will throw away once they cannot be used anymore, hence the objective is to redesign them in a sustainable way. The support will be made of recycled polycarbonate waste. It could withstand 200-700 psi based on fea. The shoe fabric and the ribbon will be made of recycled pet, while the outer sole will be made of recycled tire waste. The expected final outcome would result in creating sustainable dance community.
CHALLENGE: At first, we thought of nylon plastic waste material for the support, but when fea was conducted, some areas of the support were affected by high stresses that exceed its yield strength. The deformation couldn't get back to its original form. Eventually, we came up with the idea of polycarbonate plastic waste since it is recyclable and easy to access. Originally, we planned to sew the support to the shoe fabric but then decided to just slip the support inside Rond pointe shoe. We made holes on the fabric to slip the ribbons just like normal shoelaces as the fabric will be reused again and again for the next new Rond production.
