| DESIGN NAME: Seat Vandal PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Sofa INSPIRATION: Introducing a revolutionary modular sofa design that breaks free from conformity and draws inspiration from the dynamic world of street art. Our design features punk-style metallics that add a bold, edgy touch to the sofa's body textures. To create an even more striking effect, we've incorporated spray paint effects into the metal braces that bind the modular elements, evoking the gritty look of a defaced wall with a spray paint tag. By fusing together these elements, our modular sofa is the perfect statement piece for those who want to showcase their individuality and rebellious spirit. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Seat Vandal is a truly unique and rebellious piece of furniture that stands out from the crowd. It provokes the alternative and gives sofas some much-needed street cred'. The design is modular and features metallic upholstered forms of varying sizes that are braced with bright, contrasting graffiti-inspired metal retainers. These retainers not only add a bold touch of color to the design, but they also inspire freestyle form creation and evoke a streetwise sense of relaxation that is perfect for chilling out in style. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Seat Vandal's unique modular design is made possible through advanced manufacturing techniques like CNC machining, laser cutting, and 3D printing. The metallic textiles used in the upholstery add an eye-catching element that can be created through metalizing or weaving metallic yarns. The metal braces are designed with bright, contrasting graffiti-inspired colors, adding to the streetwise vibe. This innovative production and realization technology produces a striking piece of furniture that is sure to make a statement in any space. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The sofa's modular design offers various configurations to fit different spaces, bound by metal braces made with advanced manufacturing techniques like CNC machining. Metallic textiles come from metalizing or weaving methods, providing a unique and rebellious aesthetic. A thin layer of metal on the fabric surface or metallic yarns woven through the fabric create a striking effect. TAGS: Sofa, Modular, Seating, Freestyle, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design research used qualitative and exploratory methods to understand user needs and preferences for a modular sofa with a rebellious, street art-inspired aesthetic. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, focus groups, and surveys with potential users. Results showed a strong desire for customization and flexibility, as well as a preference for bold and unconventional design. These insights were incorporated into the final design, which has received positive feedback from users and industry professionals. The research highlights the importance of user-centered design and the impact it can have on creating successful and innovative products that meet the needs and desires of users. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in this design activity was finding a balance between the rebellious, street art-inspired aesthetic and the functional requirements of a modular sofa. The creative challenge was to create a unique and eye-catching design that also provided comfort and flexibility. Internal factors such as historical and social perspectives influenced the design, as we aimed to break free from conventional sofa design and cater to the desires of users who wanted something different. External factors such as production possibilities and technology played a role in the development of the metal braces and metallic textiles, which required advanced manufacturing techniques. Overcoming these obstacles required collaboration between designers, engineers, and manufacturers, as well as a willingness to experiment and take risks. The end result was a successful design that met the needs and desires of users while also pushing the boundaries of conventional sofa design.
