DESIGN NAME: SUPPLUS
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Relief Supplies Carton
INSPIRATION: According to the World Health Organization, 2 billion people in the world lack basic toilet facilities. Therefore, lack of toilet facilities leads to poor sanitation and causes environmental damage and health problems. SUPPLUS proposes effective solutions for refugees in African countries, Rohingya refugees from 2016, Afghanistan refugees from 2021, and especially for now Ukrainian refugees. It is expected to maintains the living standards of citizens through the carton design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SUPPLUS is a multi-functional relief supplies carton designed for war refugees or residents suffering from natural disasters. When the carton is delivered to the local area, after taking out the items inside, it can be folded into a simple toilet to solve the health concerns and environmental pollution caused by the lack of toilets. The side inner layers of SUPPLUS contain vegetable seeds, and there is waterproof and rapid composting microbial inoculant coating at the bottom. When the interior of the toilet is being filled up with feces gradually, it forms a good natural fertilizer which penetrates the inner carton to nurture these vegetable seeds. The vegetables will grow up into the outer layer in just 30 days, which can address the dietary needs of refugees.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Toilet operation instruction:
1. Delivered to refugees as cartons for shipping supplies.
2. After taking the items out, open the sides of the inner box and the outer box into a diamond shape, and fold the dust flap inward to fix them.
3. Fasten the toilet seat into the groove on the side.
4. As a toilet, the whole can be moved indoors, tents, etc., and has a toilet cover to deodorize.
Planting instruction
1. The feces accumulates in the inner box to form a natural fertilizer
2. Seeds germinate after the fertilizer penetrates through the inner layer where the vegetable seeds are stored
3. Tear open the openings on both sides of the outer layer to allow the plants to grow
Plant planting plan:
Hot climate areas: Planting amaranth is suitable for the temperature between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius, and the growth cycle is 25 to 35 days.
Cold climate areas: Planting spinach is suitable for a temperature between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius (the lowest temperature to germinate is 4 degrees), and the growth cycle is 30 to 50 days.
The toilet needs to be replaced after it accumulates feces for about a month, and plants can be harvested at the same time.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2022 in Ostrava, Czech and finished in May 2022 in Taipei, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: SUPPLUS is made of paper as a whole and provided by carton manufacturers. Fold the side up to use it as a toilet, and the bottom layer inside has an environmentally friendly waterproof coating to prevent feces from flowing out. SUPPLUS is a double-layer carton structure, using the folded space for plant growth.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The size of SUPPLUS is 510mm*330mm*320mm.
The width of the machine and equipment is 16mm, and the price of five-layer corrugated box board is 7.63 NTD per square meter, 7.63*1.42 (approximate carton area) = 10.83 NTD, and the cost of a single-layer carton is 10.83*0.65=7.0395. This product For the double-layer design, it is 14.079 NTD.
The body of SUPPLUS is a carton for packaging. After loading the materials, it will be delivered to the local area, and the contents can be taken out to start using.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main design background of SUPPLUS is the frequent wars, natural disasters, etc. in today's society. It uses the existing carton production technology to redesign, and after many origami experiments and material tests, the multi-functional carton structure is improved. It’s expected that through transportations and use of SUPPLUS, help 26 million refugees counted by United Nations with simple toilet facilities to avoid environmental mess and hygiene problems caused by defecation anywhere. Also, help refugees who cannot get enough food to grow their own vegetables to avoid more diseases caused by malnutrition.
CHALLENGE: Lack of toilet facilities leads to poor sanitation, pollutes land, rivers and causes environmental damage. There are even 310,000 children in the world die due to diarrhea caused by poor water quality each year. Therefore, nearly 13 million of UN-certified children refugees who suffer from stunting, severe malnutrition because of the lack of food and undernutrition. This situation also increases mortality and disease in young children ages.
