DESIGN NAME:
Motar

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
AR-based outdoor educational system

INSPIRATION:
Today's children were born and have grown accustomed to living with technology. Parents are concerned about their kids' continuous decline in outdoor activities due to Internet addiction. To make a profit, game developers are using a well-designed incentive system in their games to get higher customer stickiness. How can we use similar logic to encourage children to go nature and form a healthy lifestyle with outdoor activities?

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Motar is very different from other children's educational AR APPs. It was designed for connecting the physical environment and virtual content in an open world, not limited to a room. Parents have tried many ways to get their kids outdoor and avoid being couch potatoes. However, the real change needs a stronger inner will of the kids. Motar can elevate the attractiveness of going outdoor and exploring nature through the incentive system of digital technology.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The project started with 3-month user research that focused on primary school kids (5-12), which is a concerned group having Internet addiction nowadays. To win back children’s time for going nature, I came up with a concept to design an Augmented Reality system to link virtual games with physical outdoor environments. This was inspired by the gamification and incentive system of successful APPs. By building up this bridge, children will be attracted by trigger events and encouraged to go outdoor as their daily routine.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2021 in Hong Kong and finished in May 2022 in Ningbo,

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The mobile APP has AR games that are based on the real-time surrounding environment. Leap Motion technology will be used to detect and analyze the hand gestures of the kid while playing the game. By learning and memorizing gestures in the game, children's working memory will be trained. Montessori Education Method was used to develop the curriculum for learning in the APP.
