DESIGN NAME: Are You Hungry?
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster
INSPIRATION: Inspired by real cases of ordering food during recording sessions. The client has a good sense of humor and we share the same motto of having fun in serious work. That is why I took this approach.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With a touch of humor on the doubling meaning of hungry, the intention of this design is to lighten up the intimidating, and almost claustrophobic atmosphere of the recording studio. Artists are hungry for achievement in the music industry. And during recording sessions, they can be literally hungry for food. People working in the studio can easily resonate with the standard music buttons in the form of colorful food. A little smile in the heart can work wonder in a creative process.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design is highly appreciated by the client. And reportedly, it became an icebreaker in conversation for visiting artists and producers working in the studio.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project completed in Jun 2020 in Hong Kong SAR, China
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: Poster paper(matte)
Realization process highlight: I insisted on using all real food items in the photo shoot without any Photoshop manipulation. The most memorable part was to look for a triangular tortilla chip that perfectly resembles the shape of a typical play button. There was one in two large packs of Doritos. Lucky me, and I ate them all.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 40 x 50cm, 40 x 56cm(alternative)
TAGS: music humor, music production, recording studio, food
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I designed the company logo, which won the Bronze Award of the 11th Worldwide Logo Design Award - 2020, for this same client with witty manipulation of simple geometric shapes. The client, Mr. Hei Wong, the director of Duality of Music, appreciates the style a lot. This poster was a continuation with the same approach, and I tried to push it further. My attempt was to come up with a unique way to present ordinary music-related objects in an extraordinary, and humorous way.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of this design was to achieve balance of natural colors, shapes, sizes and texture of real food without any Photoshop touch-up. I still remember vividly trying out all kinds of food in the layout for photo shoots, and ended up eating all a lot of those. That was such a fun process and creative experience. The client appreciates the result immensely because we share the same motto which is - we can always have fun, even in serious work.
