DESIGN NAME: The Goober
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Baby Care
INSPIRATION: The design of the Goober is taken from a lovely creature made of children’s play-dough. The dimples on the device’s surface indicate the movement and signs of a baby in the mother’s womb. All the forms and designed elements are integrated in a way that makes an emotional connection between the mother, baby, and the product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this product is to prevent infants younger than 12 months, from dying of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). By monitoring the infant’s vital signs (heart rate – blood oxygen level and body temperature) 24/7, this product listens for suspicious data and alerts the parents at the first sign of symptom and prevents the child’s death. Due to its very small dimensions and light weight this device leads to make care much easier and more accurate.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It provides a fully automatic device for monitoring the baby's health and access to the doctor and family for accurate remote monitoring besides Reminding the time of taking the baby medications and the desired dose according to the doctor's prescription. Using some kind of programming in the software of this device has caused the battery life to be multiplied. It keeps the history of all prescriptions and electronic copies issued by the doctor. In addition, there is a ability to connect to smart home devices to fully control the amount of light, sound, temperature and humidity without parental intervention.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been designed in 2021 in Boston and it is under production.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All the surfaces are made with ABS with a high-quality matte plate finishing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: General research was conducted on the main problems of babies that cause death and how technology, with the help of medicine, engineering, and design, can help to prevent the attacks and death. We solved all the problems with the goober, which detects, monitors, and then takes action in a way that gives the baby a healthy life.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was how to use the technology to monitor and fully care for babies, especially in critical situations, and report all the data to parents and the doctor as a supervisor. Integrating all the complex PCBs and detecting components into a relatively small product dimension was the next challenge.
