DESIGN NAME: Joint assist
PRIMARY FUNCTION: People With Leg Problems to Stand
INSPIRATION: As of November 1, 2020, the results of the seventh national census show that China has entered an aging society.With the increase of age,degenerative changes in the physiological functions of the elderly, especially the decline of lower limb functions are more significant.In the long run,it will lead to other diseases, such as muscle atrophy, which greatly reduces the elderly's ability to live independently.Therefore,the design of lower limb auxiliary products becomes particularly important.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Joint assist is a leg assist product design.The elderly and those with stiff leg muscles due to disease have a difficult time crouching and standing again.The product fits the leg curve and effectively protects the leg muscles.Separating the thighs and calves increases flexibility and utilizes the elastic force generated by the contraction of the elastic material to help the user stand up and avoid falling due to loss of center of gravity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When people support the body to move up, the support force is concentrated on the knee, the thigh muscle drives the calf muscle to contract through the knee. This product reduces the pressure of the leg muscle with the assistance of elastic material, and helps the user stand up with the elasticity of elastic material.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in January 2020 in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China, and ended in November 2020 in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The thigh and calf shell of this product is made of TPU elastic material,with good wear resistance,high strength and great elasticity.With the help of elastic material, the leg muscle pressure can be reduced.The shell is equipped with screen printing and air holes to enhance the appearance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: According to statistics, the growth rate of the disabled elderly population in China will reach the maximum by 2023, and the demand for product design for the elderly is increasing day by day.The elderly and those suffering from some special diseases have very fragile bones,and casual movements may cause injuries to them.Therefore, auxiliary standing products are particularly urgent. This design can not only help them to stand, but also improve their quality of life and confidence.
CHALLENGE: For this design,how to select materials is the key and difficult point of the design. Users' leg muscles are stiff,and they need to use elastic materials to support the movement.The selection of elastic materials should fit the curve of the leg as far as possible,and do not increase the burden of walking during the use.
