DESIGN NAME: Wildwild Twist
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bowl
INSPIRATION: My goal is to design and make high quality handmade glass that looks interesting from all angles and creates new experiences for the user. My inspiration comes from the Finnish nature, especially from the element of water. I am inspired by water in all its forms - liquid, steam and ice. The theme of the glass art is spring - the time, when ice has partly melted and is forming crystal-like spherical formations and bubbly forms in the water. The design reflects the interplay of water and glass. Both water and glass reflect light and shapes in interesting ways.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This bowl is free-blown in a hot shop using old Filigree and Murrine glass blowing techniques. Thus, every piece is unique. The bowl is three-dimensional, each side looking equally fascinating, and the form reflects light in an intriguing manner. As for the most unique feature, the side of the bowl has slightly elevated round and coloured air filigrees looking distinct from both the out- and inner side, sparkling like small diamonds in the sun and forming interesting reflections on the table.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This work is the most beautiful as a stand-alone object. However, it also has a high functionality and can hence be used for keeping fruits or small home items. The bowl suits perfectly as a centerpiece in the middle of the dining table, or it can be placed next to a window where rays of light hit the vase in a beautiful manner. Overall, it fits all around the house allowing the unique glass design to complement the interior. Due to its three-dimensional shape, the glass looks different from each side, diversifying the visual experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2019 in Helsinki, Finland, where I made the first model. That has been exhibited in Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius in Helsinki 2019, and in the Venice Glass Week 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I made these bowls with passion, using old glass blowing techniques. My objective is to design glass that looks interesting from 360 degrees. The goal of my research has been to increase the mobility and vibrancy of the glass by improving the liveliness of the shape, the functionality and the reflection of the glass with air filigrees. It took a while to find the right working method. By mastering the glass blowing techniques and processes I have managed to create the Wildwild Twist glass series.
CHALLENGE: Designing objects that looks interesting from every angle while mastering the required glass blowing skills is truly challenging. It is demanding to use the air filigree technique so that the outcome is integral, the filigrees emphasizing the shape of the glass and allowing light to reflect beautifully. These bowls require a high level of glass blowing skills. The most difficult part in terms of technique, is managing to place the air filigrees in a suitably elevated manner and using them for just half of the bowl. Finally, I found the right way to produce them.
