DESIGN NAME: Seeker
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifuntional Fire Detector
INSPIRATION: In recent years we have experienced so many forest fires resulting in massive areas to get deforested. However, it turned out that the loss would be much less if the fire signals had been earlier and from more accurate locations. We wanted to create a forest furniture that can detect any air anomaly and warn people as soon as possible to prevent unwanted events.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Seeker serves as air quality sensor with remote monitoring capability while it is also a nest for birds. The electronic parts are hidden with warm nest design. Shell consists of inner and outer segments. Middle part of inner segment is for birds, other is for electronic boards and batteries. Outer parts which are for antenna and sensors sheltered from harsh environmental conditions but kept as being able to sense the air quality periodically. Sensors detect fire or change in air quality in forests and warn related people via LoRa mesh network.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While developing the Seeker the goal was to keep its usability as simple as its looks. It is hanged on a tree by its own rope. The housing allows lots of batteries to be used so that the replenishment or recharging batteries will not be a problem for more than two years which means there is no need to take down nest for a long time. Because of the sensor capacity it will be hanged one per square kilometer. Seekers family will be connected to gateways located in proper areas so that all features of each individual seeker will be monitored from an IoT platform. The platform has desktop and mobile integration so in case of sensing an anomaly by the sensors, the mesh network will carry the data to gateways. The gateways will send the anomaly data to IoT, which will send push notifications to mobile and desktop terminals.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in Turkey in the end of 2021 and still ongoing

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Main frame is manufactured from composite material with pultrusion technique. The coverings on both sides are also composite plates with minimal additional machining. The covers are assembled to main frame via stainless steel bolts and proofness is realized with liquid gaskets. A piece durable parachute rope is used to hang the product to trees. Usage of plastic is intentionally avoided, and composite materials are selected due to their environment friendly and recyclable properties.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Package dimension W 316 x D 237 x H 270 mm
Hole diameter 32 mm
TAGS: LoRa mesh network, forest fire, deforestation, fire sensing, fire warning, eco friendly
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the development phase of the product, researched was carried out with the focus on competing products, electronic components, and bird nests. The size of the product shaped according to research results.
CHALLENGE: We see the challenge as bringing the recent commination methods, with eco-friendly material while keeping birds and equipment safe and, yet, to be cost effective, suitable for mass production and rare maintenance.
