| DESIGN NAME: Poly Collection PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture and Accessories INSPIRATION: Conceived as a design experiment that attempts an exploration of Pure Geometric Forms. Poly Furniture collection draws inspiration from Geometric Polygonal forms, Islamic Pattern tessellation and Japanese Kirigami. The design utilizes stark geometry, sharply defined forms, contrasting white and black surfaces, and monochromatic velvet upholstery, to forge a new identity that is distinctive from its inherent inspirations. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Poly Furniture collection explores the typology of polygons; a polygon is a plane figure that is described by a finite number of straight line segments, connected to form a closed polygonal chain. A simple polygon is one which does not intersect itself. Poly Collection, utilizes polygons as the building blocks for a diverse number of contemporary furniture items. The collection design takes into consideration the manufacturing limitations of the Egyptian market, and attempts to overcome these limitations, by using pure geometry in its form generation. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Poly is a streamlined contemporary furniture collection, that appeals to the taste of younger generations while drawing inspiration from heritage both local and global. It is designed to offer both luxury, and comfort in a contemporary context. Also a separate research on the manufacturing capabilities and processes in Egypt was undertaken, to be be knowledgeable of the industrial limitations. CHALLENGE: The challenge with Poly was overcoming the manufacturing limitation of the Egyptian furniture industry. Thus the use of straight forward pure shapes and surface, and reliance on CNC cut MDF wood technology in designing and manufacturing the collection.
