| DESIGN NAME: Wintersweet PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smartwatch Face INSPIRATION: My Chinese painting works inspired me a lot in this design. It inspires me to think about mixing the traditional painting looking with the modern technology. It makes me believe that the modern technology does not separate traditional art from our society nowadays, instead somehow provides the traditional art new media to live on. It even enlivens the traditional art further to a new level. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: What makes this design unique is that the whole background is a Chinese painting, and the saturation of colour fades away as the watch battery level goes down. In Chinese painting, the saturation of colour is not always strong. The colour is used as a kind of indication, just a transparent shading. So this design applies such concept. By using the battery level to control the colour transparency, the whole watch face gives you different feel (because of different colour level) every other time. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The background is one of my Chinese paintings, the wintersweet. I took the photo of it, and transferred into Photoshop. With Photoshop, I separate the brunch and the flower from the background. After that, I put the brunch and the flower in different layers so that the change of colour saturation will not affect the branch.To achieve the colour change from red flower to white one, the flower layer is duplicated into to two, one is covered with red, the other remains white. The red one is on top of the white one. Then I just need to link the battery level (100% - 0%) to the red flower layer. The higher battery level, the more opaque the colour become (heavy coloured Chinese painting). The lower battery level, the more transparent the colour become (light coloured painting). When battery level is lower than 5%, the flower is close to pure white, and there is a low-battery icon at the upper left side blinking to indicate user. So the user not only can tell the battery level from the flower colour, but also can see from the blinking icon. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimension of this design is 512 x 512px on Android watch, 400 x 400px on Samsung watch. It supports both round and square smartwatches. TAGS: traditional, art, Chinese, painting, chinesepainting, floral, casual RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Nothing much about the research. I have been thinking about the idea that put my Chinese painting in the smartwatch, let the modern technology enliven my artwork. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design is to keep the Chinese painting look while the colour changes.
