| DESIGN NAME: Kaleido PRIMARY FUNCTION: Umbrella Stand INSPIRATION: Simplicity means uncluttered appearance, which also means the understanding of the essence and the function of product. Inspired by the American Contemporary style, which consists of strong geometry and exposed structure, airiness is the key element. With the purpose of bringing affordable products with attitude to users, this design tends to introduce clean elegance and simple-taste into the entryway, in order to improve the first impression of household. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To break with the image of typical umbrella stand, Kaleido is designed to provide another option that looks like an art piece. Without umbrella, Kaleido looks like 6 stretched rings spinning, which can make the room more vivid. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The spinning structure leads to better management on the umbrellas, as each umbrella scattered evenly and tilted outward, so it is easier to people to recognize their own umbrellas. Kaleido is capable to manage 6 umbrellas. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2020 in Hong Kong and finished in April 2020 in Hong Kong. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Kaleido is bonded with 6 eclipse-rings, which evenly scatter and rotate at the specific angle, to ensure the enough space for the storage of each umbrella, as well as improving the action the user leave and take the umbrella. A little sphere can be wielded on the top of each ring, in order to hang the folding umbrellas. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 250 mm Depth 250 mm Height 615 mm TAGS: kaleido, umbrella stand, metal, art piece, entryway, homeware RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Typical umbrella stand is like a big block of cylinder in a single colour. As a homeware piece usually based in the entryway, it should be more playful and elegant to improve the first impression of household, as well as the interaction with users. CHALLENGE: The challenge is mainly on the technical implements. The quantity of eclipses need to be determined to confirm the amount of umbrellas could manage and the diameter of the stand; as well as the most appropriate shape and form, that fit most of the size of umbrellas.
