DESIGN NAME: Supcat
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Paddle Board
INSPIRATION: Supcat was inspired by the catamaran boats, which everyone already knows for their performance and seaworthiness. Combining the best in the world, mixing monohull and multihull in a unique stand up paddle board design, the result is a board with less hydrodynamic drag as it has less wet surface than a board of the same size.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design based on catamarans makes the board lighter, more agile and stable in rough water, which makes the product attractive for stand up paddlers looking to spend less energy on paddling and reach longer distances and courses with less effort. The design itself has an ecological appeal as the core that fills the board is made of eps expanded polystyrene which is approximately 95 percent air. A material that has been used a lot in the surf industry to partially replace the polyurethane based cores.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A stand up paddle board developed for those looking for stability and paddling with great comfort without needing great efforts for touring and long journeys. Using the Supcat is very simple and does not require a lot of time to be able to use the product, it is only necessary for the user to check the weather conditions and local regulations for the practice of the sport, put the supcat in the water, take the paddle and have fun.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in december 2013 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and finished in 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and was exhibted in the design award of museu da casa brasileira in november 2017, Sao Paulo, Brasil, and was exhibted in the surf expo in september 2021, Orlando, USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Supcat is made of composite materials such as epoxy resin and fiberglass or carbon fabrics that are laminated manually with the help of the vacuum process on an eps block that is milled using a cnc machine. The entire assembly after the resin cures becomes a strong, light and impact resistant monoblock. During the finishing process, some accessories are added such as a keel box, a carrying handle strap, an elastic support to carry backpacks and the support for the leash.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: lenght 4.260 mm x width 760 mm x thickness 180 mm x weight 14.5 kilos

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Supcat came from a memory of when I visited a boat exhibition in Italy in 2008. In that exhibition I saw for the first time a hull shaped vessel with a mixture of catamaran and monohull, which must have been about 40 feet long and I found it very interesting. From that memory I started the sketches.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was the adjustment of the production process, where we had to test the production through milling technology using a cnc machine for polystyrene blocks and also through the method through fiberglass molds. The milling process with a cnc machine proved to be the best way to manufacture the boards.
