PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Instructional Materials

INSPIRATION:
In the course of growing up, everyone have heard some people call others with insulting words such as sissy boy, Nancy boy or tomboy, and there have been many cases of sexual bullying in the newspapers and magazines, and students with different gender temperament have often been harassed. During the research phase, trait laboratory found that more than half of the students from the LGBTQ community had been verbally and physically harassed or attacked because of their sexual orientation and gender identity, which shows that the public still lacks gender diversity awareness.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Trait laboratory propose a hypothesis based on the assumption that everyone have genes, which not only affect appearance, but also traits, so Trait laboratory visualize traits into different colors, and through the user's choice, they can mix them to create a personal quality factor. These different color trait genes symbolize the expression of different gender traits.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The use of trait laboratory, a Instructional Materials based on exploring different gender traits. Trait laboratory visualize traits into different colors, and through the user's choice, they can mix them to create a personal quality factor. These different color trait genes symbolize the expression of different gender traits, so that students can intuitively understand that human gender is not just a dichotomy of male or female, but that everyone contains different proportions of masculine and feminine, so as to find out that everyone is a unique individual, and thus respect people of different gender temperaments.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in November 2021 in Taiwan and finished in June 2022 in Taiwan, and was exhibited in Taipei City of Taiwan in June 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
It is made by the principle of sodium alginate crystal ball; the sodium alginate solution is dropped into the calcium lactate solution, and the calcium ion will replace the sodium ion on the carboxyl group of the sodium alginate, so that the connection between the sodium alginate molecules is stronger, forming a structure which composed of reticular fiber, and the contents can be wrapped in a gel structure to form a semipermeable membrane.

Mix the sodium alginate solution with food coloring to make solutions of different colors to present different gender traits.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
Everyone has different views on gender. Some people think that human beings are only divided into male and female gender because of physiological structural factors, gender stereotypes are still happening. Through the promotion of instructional materials, some people can change traditional thinking and viewpoints. When someone doubts the real feasibility of the instructional materials, trait laboratory allows children to actually use the instructional materials, explain and carry out activities through field operations. Children can happily create trait gene and give back and gain.
