DESIGN NAME: EasyMed
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pharmacy Vending Machine
INSPIRATION: Based on emerging new technologies, innovate and conceptualize the next era of vending machines. Research and study an on-campus pharmacy vending machine at Purdue. Identify positive and negative user experiences and produce innovative solutions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The strengths of Easy Med are improved access to vending machines for wheelchair users, children, shorter people, people with mobility difficulties, and the partially visually impaired. The touchscreen user interface is unique due to its larger screen size, accessible mode interface, and easy-to-understand design. Accessible mode, where the screen shifts and changes to a lower layout, allows wheelchair users to use the machine with a maximum height of 48" from the ground up for the accessible mode interface. This makes the public-use vending machine more inclusive and accessible to a larger user base. Those who are in medical emergencies can easily access the vending machine on a 24/7 basis, especially when access to a pharmacy is unavailable.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Upon approaching Easy Med, the user will see a rotating hologram logo, under-glow lights, a UV blocking, rain-blocking, tempered, transparent glass panel, and an ambient light lighting the surrounding area when dark. This makes the vending machine more inviting while serving multiple uses. First, the user is greeted with a 16" x 20" large touchscreen with a display of all available items in a menu, the time, the date, the weather, an app download QR code for remote payment, and an accessible mode button. Second, the user selects an item that has the details, instructions, materials, and warnings of that item. Then, the user inputs the desired amount for that item. Third, the user pays for the item using a QR code from the associated app or a card reader. Lastly, the user retrieves the item via the elevated pickup window which prevents stooping. Moreover, in front of the pickup window, there is an extended edge that could be used as a temporary table surface for placing bags or purses.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took place in West Lafayette, Indiana. It started in January 2021 and finished in March 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A UX study approach was used to identify the user experience of selecting, purchasing, and retrieving an item from a vending machine. Experiences were recorded and analyzed in Atlas.ti for generating design directions.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Vending machine size: 1400mm x 1500mm x 2370mm
Screen Size: 457mm x 508mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The think-aloud method, where users spoke aloud their thoughts as they interacted with the vending machine, was used as the UX study approach. Three user journeys were recorded in video format and every sentence, interaction, feedback, and observation was recorded as codes in Atlas.ti. Each user purchased a different item and had a different experience. The codes were analyzed and grouped into positive and negative user experiences. The results were used to produce new design directions.
CHALLENGE: Refining the 3D form was challenging in CAD because I wanted EasyMed to be inviting and not obtrusive like most geometric vending machines. Coming up with solutions for existing problems was the most difficult process.
