DESIGN NAME:
Mute

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Chair

INSPIRATION:
MUTE is a design inspired by the objective obstacles that appear alongside the intrinsic nature of any existence with an implicit expression of animism, and questions if the blocked information sentiment can be conveyed without intuitive sensation and perception. (*Full text in PDF)

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design is a visualized concept that explores the connection without interaction and represents any beings in a mental and physical state of communication impasse. The design is realized with an iterated relation in mind, starting from one solid bar, to a shadow, to a full chair, and further reflecting to another half that fills the integral shape, while that new half performs as an individual piece representing the completed half of a whole itself.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design is intended to be functional and communicative. Containing two chairs and three phrases, each chair alternates and mirrors the other, reflecting on its own image, and each phrase per se connects the former and latter form, and the two combined as a figuration of interaction. The interaction with the chair iterates the idea of the vanished half and triggers it into the further integral level that imaginatively symbolizes the same as the difference between the three and four dimensions to humankind - as methods of perceiving time in linear and non-linear, the space outside the body of the chair is the higher dimension and foreign realm from the subjective perspective of the object.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research is heavily focused on a logic map that leads from the nature of an object to its obstacles and the rationality that make the presumptions of all being tenable. Specifically speaking, the questions and understandings of this animistic being cannot be fanciful or invalid to any extent. For instance, the objective obstacles are substantially existing, symbolizing not just a physical difficulty, but more of a subjective choice - a choice that is highly possible to be formed when the object is, relatively speaking, a sentimental being. The map is wired and layered back and forth as in the chicken and egg problem, where every phenomenon is simultaneously derived from and causing a new fact or condition, and the new fact or condition further changes the object's nature and reaction when it's causing and facing the next obstacle. The research is mainly concerned with the mind game that constructs this world where MUTE exists.

CHALLENGE:
The main task would be to idealize the appearance that can explain the solid and vain parts as the interpretation of the word "mute." The placement and selection of stainless steel and glass are designed carefully to achieve the visualized concept, metaphorically a perceptible silence, transformed from the work's title, and each designed component articulates that through matching the right property – a void or solid element symbolizes the perceptible or the silent.
