DESIGN NAME: I Can
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multiway charm
INSPIRATION: This is designed to serve as a symbol of self-love and women empowerment. Carving your path to success may be full of adversities and challenges, but the will and the strength to push forward must come from within. Hopefully through this charm, whenever they wear it close their heart or close to their hand, this design will remind them that "I can".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a handmade pendant that can be worn 3 ways: vertically or horizontally, as a charm pendant, and horizontally as a bracelet charm. The morse codes of I Can is embedded in a mother of pearl, a symbol of prosperity and femininity, and set in gold bar, a symbol of strength. Even the dimensions have meaning: 4mm x 2cm to symbolize the 4 letter word "love" and 2 letter word, "me". Finally, the "I" in "I can" is highlighted by using citrine, a symbol of abundance, to manifest the same affirmation to the wearer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The gold back loop at the back of the pendant is designed to fit any thin to medium sized chain. The loop has a small bar connectors that can hold the chain in preferred direction, either vertically or horizontally, and makes it look like the chain is directly soldered to the charm.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2021 in Metro Manila and finished in October 2021 in Bulacan, and was launched via an exhibit online in November 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The mother of pearl was cut accordingly and drilled carefully to hold the gold morse codes and citrine gemstones. It is then locked securely at the back of the gold bar with small gold braces on both ends. The back of the charm has a two way gold loop on both ends where the chain can pass and hang or lay either horizontally or vertically as if it is soldered directly and seamlessly.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Using creative research, what started with the goal of affirmation and women empowerment, the meaning and symbolism attached to the materials considered all had relevance. A consultation with gemologist, Reiki practitioners, goldsmiths and some of the top local women entrepreneurs was done to collect data, understand not only the symbolism but also the durability of raw goods and the overall look of the charm. After which, the materials from different suppliers were sourced out locally and abroad. Once the handmade prototype was finished, the sturdiness and actual look was tested to ensure that it wont flip down and maintain its planned look while wearing it.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part is the discussion with the goldsmith for production possibilities. The mother of pearl is a delicate material to begin with and punching it with holes for the gold setting was the main concern. Several tools and handling experiments were made to be able to perfect the setting.
