DESIGN NAME: Whale
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vacuum Cleaner
INSPIRATION: Usually, everybody hides their table vacuum cleaner. It gets stored somewhere hidden and you don't actually use it as often as you would have wanted to. This was the thought that inspired the making of Whale. This product is a sculpture and can be left on the table or on any other surface as a decorative object when it's not in use.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Whale is a two-in-one design object that can be used as a table vacuum cleaner and as a decorative freestanding object. Keeping it in sight makes the product more convenient and practical to use. The shape of it is ergonomic and sculptural.
This appliance is divided in two main parts. Firstly, in the head is situated the dust container, separated from the body by a filter. Secondly, the body houses the engine and the USB-rechargeable battery.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To use Whale for vacuuming you just press once on the start button and you can easily maneuver it to suck the dust or crumbs from the surfaces. A window on the bottom side allows the user to check the level of dirt contained inside. Remove the dirt from its container by detaching the tank through a bayonet lock.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2021 in Bucharest and finished in February 2022 in Bucharest, Romania.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To find the final ergonomic shape of Whale, multiple prototypes were produced by 3d printing. All the design improvements were made after multiple user testing and feedback. The idea was that the product, keeping its decorative quality, becomes very comfortable and intuitive to use. The shell of the appliance is made from recycled plastic.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This vacuum cleaner remains in the small vacuum cleaner section, due to its contained dimensions: L297mm x H87mm x W60mm. It comes with an integrated rechargeable Li-Ion battery.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Aiming to create a high performance table vacuum cleaner, the market research helped immensely in obtaining the first necessary technical data. Afterward, multiple design experimentation with the 3d printed prototypes were necessary in finding the final size and shape of the shell. The final ergonomic and sculptural shape was approved only after thorough user testing and multiple technical adjustments.
CHALLENGE: Our main challenge in the design process was to maintain the reduced size of the appliance while not compromising its performance requirements. Obtaining the right hardware in a reduced space meant multiple design optimizations and technical experimentation and research.
