DESIGN NAME: Fun Flight Journey
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: Firstly, the development of all industries has been hit to varying degrees by the COVID-19, among which the loss of the civil aviation industry is huge. It has become an urgent problem to improve people's travel demand safely and effectively. Secondly, passengers hope to have a rich and interesting experience on the plane to make the journey no longer boring. Thirdly, the fear of flying still plagues a large number of people.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fun Flight is a gamification application aiming to create a fun and safe coexistence for passengers. It help passengers not only to explore the history, culture, attractions and food of the city in the routes in real time through a gamified way, but also alleviate the fear of flying through the temporary on-board group to communicate with passengers when the plane encounters turbulence. It can also be effectively promoting the economic recovery and development of the civil aviation industry.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Before takeoff, users will open the app and enter the information module, which will obtain various information about the flight destination, such as the route map, the situation at the destination, the history of turbulence, the forecast of turbulence, safety and first aid information. Users can also choose the tourism module at the bottom of the navigation bar to obtain destination tourism information, including strategy, food, travel notes, Q&A, etc. Users can know the geographical location of each scenic spot, background story, opening time, highlight evaluation, real photos, etc. In the community module, users can learn about today's flight topics, participate in discussions, and join various interest groups to find like-minded friends. During the flight, the user will enter the game after open the application welcome page, choose the "Play" button to enter the game, the page in the form of gaming show real flight trajectories and display the related flight data, users can also see the time of arrival in the next city along the way, before the plane will fly along the real track mileage accumulation (gold). When arriving at a city along the way, the user can see the number of attractions and levels in that city. Choose "Start" to enter the exploration, and the user needs to complete the exploration task in limited time (the actual elapsed time of the plane in the city). Click "Throw" to roll the dice, and the plane will fly to a designated number of squares, each representing the city's different attractions, food, historic buildings and more. Users will need to complete different types of game tasks, such as fun quizzing, learning while watching, looking at pictures and recognizing objects. After completing a quest to explore the city, users will receive a postcard of the city as a souvenir. In addition, if there are bumps during the flight, the "on-board group" icon will light up in the community page, and users can click this button to join the group chat, sharing their feelings with experienced or enthusiastic passengers on board, comforting each other and dispelling their fear of flying. Users can also choose on the membership list to chat with designated users and connect with friends and family who are not sitting next to them. The "on-board group" will be automatically dismissed after the turbulence is over to avoid disturbing other users.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2021 and finished in January 2022 in Shenzhen.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design is carried out on the basis of qualitative research. The research objective is to improve the fun and security of passengers during flight through gamification design. We used user-centered design, extracting relevant design requirements through in-depth interviews with target users, and integrating detailed user interview worksheets, including personal flight habits, historical flight experience, flight knowledge and interest preferences. In the demand analysis stage, we defined work roles and user types, process model, work activity affinity diagram to sort out and divide requirements, and established social model, task structure model, task interaction model and physical model as the basis of conceptual design. Finally, we use the user experience measurement method of heuristic evaluation to adjust and optimize the design according to the evaluation results.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is how to use a mobile app to address two of the biggest challenges of flight experience: boredom and insecurity. This requires not only a thorough understanding of the physical limitations of mobile applications, but also a high level of empathy for users, especially those who fly. To meet the two major needs of passengers in a gamification way is the magic trick we found. After finding the design and operation strategy, we need to continue to practice and explore, trial and error, to achieve the best user experience.
