| DESIGN NAME: Foxtail PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry Set INSPIRATION: The set is custom made. My customer is a professional gardener. She loves her profession and wants to wear jewelry that reflects to her profession. Inspiration was easy to find: The foxtail seed is her favorite seed. Anyone looking closer at this seed can see why: it is shaped like an egg, but in black color and a surface of stings. A beautiful strange bomb of a future life. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Foxtail Jewelry Set is not made by man, it is made by nature. Every single piece is a moulding of the same foxtail palm seed. Yet it is from different parts of the seed, or the pressure by moulding differs. Every single piece of jewelry is like a fingerprint of the seed - but from a different finger. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This jewelry set makes gardening noticeably in a complete different way. It is not obvious but sensible. All parts of the set belong together but they are different in their appearance. It can be worn as a set or in any desired form of combination. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Foxtail was formed, cast, sanded and set in the summer of 2021. From first attempts with wax to the finished set it took about 8 weeks. Located was the project in Langen near Frankfurt. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To get to all parts of the jewelry set, I had to heat bees wax and mold it around the seed. After smoothing it down, I peeled it off - literally, I had to try for a while because of the kerning. The peeled-off wax was placed to a flat surface and brought into the shape I wanted. After casting the form the silver was sanded, all technical parts adjusted and finally polished. And a few parts of the set were enhanced with a ruby set into a silver bezel. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ring: Diameter app. 22 mm x 7 mm but sawn into two parts Pendant: Diameter app. 30mm Brooch: Diameter app. 25mm Pin: Diameter app. 20mm TAGS: Ring, pendant, brooch, pin, ruby, foxtail, seed, gardener, custom made RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since it is a custom made jewelry set the focus of research was in getting clear what kind of symbol my client would choose for her profession. We talked a lot about planting and seeds and she was so kind to bring different seeds to my workshop. Doing research was to observe which seed would make her eyes shine as bright as possible. CHALLENGE: I made a lot of molding in wax. The molding is curved, as the seed is. The challenge was to flatten the wax without destroying the really lively pattern of the seed.
