PRIMARY FUNCTION: Gas Station
INSPIRATION: The project is inspired by slider phones, especially those taking “thinness, smoothness” as their main appearance design language. This design idea, featuring sleek lines and visual stratification, breaks conventional gas stations’ design of cumbersome single-layer gable, demonstrating the brand concept of “pushing the envelope” and “staying positive”.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project, a new tailor-made gas station designed by Guangzhou ACE Group for Fuhai Group, is optimized and innovated in terms of color and style based on traditional gas stations. The layout of its roof features a double-layered hollowed-out ascending slope and ETFE inflatable membrane, which, combined with a slanting pillar, exudes a strong sense of design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project employs the color scheme of white base + cyan blue gradation, which, compared with common fixed color schemes, endows the visual texture of the entire gas station with an extra sense of layer and depth. The design of the double-layered hollowed-out ascending slope and ETFE inflatable membrane lends to the roof of the gas station an extra sense of design and daylighting, thereby conserving more energy.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project, initiated in May 2021 in Dongying, Shandong Province and whose design scheme was completed in December, is scheduled to kick off in March 2022 and be put into operation in June.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design team, researching and thinking outside the box about the design and purpose of the gas station, breaks away from the design idea of its traditional counterparts that consists mainly of plain color schemes, lines and circles. In this project, the design team lends to the rigid fabric a sense of dynamism via the slanting columns, which, combined with color gradation and hollowed-out + transparent filled top floor design, renders the entire architecture lighter and more designer.
CHALLENGE: As the difficulties of the project lie in the design positioning of “pushing the envelope”, the design team has made several attempts to embody “breakthrough”, ETFE inflatable membranes being one of the them. The crux of this material centers on the construction process and strength, so the design team collaborates with the material supplier to work on designing the overall structure of the ultra-lightweight thin cornice, thereby solving the problem with forces.
