| DESIGN NAME: CaneDL PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk Lamp INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by the idea of dematerialization and the principle of a light guide. Like if the light appears out of nowhere and illuminates the work surface brightly. Similar ideas were realized in Oluce Acrilica, 1962. It is a large decorative fluorescent table lamp made of transparent acrylic. Nowadays light sources have become smaller and brighter, optical acrylic production technologies have been improved which makes it possible to implement CaneDL lamp design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The archetype of the design is а candle on a candlestick. It is a cane-shaped light guide that redirects light from a hidden source at the base to the tabletop. The luminous flow is bright enough and focused to ensure comfortable reading, writing or drawing. Built-in passive radiator dissipates heat from a powerful LED. Due to transparency, the lamp has a slight background glow, remains inconspicuous on the table and does not distract attention, allowing to better concentrate on the workflow. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lamp is waterproof and has no moving parts. The upper stop above the radiator allows you to hold and carry the lamp. It is installed on a table with a light beam directed to the working area. It is mobile and can function both from AC and from the built-in battery, which is charged via USB port. Turning on/off and switching of three brightness level is carried out by touching the radiator of the lamp. When the battery is low, the light start flashing signaling the need for recharging. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the manufacture of a plastic base, it is assumed to use the injection molding method. The light guide should be made of optical acrylic or glass. The aluminum or stainless steel heat radiator is to be made of by CNC turning. All electronic components including battery, charging and power boards can be assembled from standard mass-produced parts or can be made to order. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 105mm x 105mm x 255mm TAGS: canedl, candle, desk lamp, table lamp, lighting design, canedl lamp, candle lamp, kairossdesign, contemporary lighting RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The increasing popularity of design dematerialization philosophy goes hand in hand with the concept of sustainable design. This minimalistic lamp saves materials and energy during production. It performs its function without taking up much valuable physical and visual space, our attention and thoughts. This allows a person to focus better on performing tasks, saves time, increases efficiency. The design can be easily adapted to create other types of lamps - sconce, pendant and floor. CHALLENGE: The most difficult design task was to create a harmonious image and a new minimalistic form factor of the lamp with the required internal layout: battery, electronic boards, radiator, LED, reflector and light guide. To do so the working prototype was built using inexpensive components. It showed the effectiveness of modern light emitters and light guide for directional illumination of the working surface and confirmed the possibility of mass production of such lamps today.
