PRIMARY FUNCTION: Biodegradable Folding Cup
INSPIRATION: These days, packaging consumption is very popular in China, where both demand and technology are stimulating it. Milk tea cup is one typical example. The cities are full of milk tea shops, located in high-traffic areas like shopping malls. The fast pace of life makes this type of consumption seem like a matter of course, but should it really be? After research, the milk tea cup has been used as a breakthrough to provoke a reflection on packaging.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In order to relieve the current situation of solid waste occupation, and to enhance people's environmental awareness, this foldable milk tea cup has been conceived. It conducts a special side folding to reduce the volume of solid waste after drinking. Meanwhile, the related fun patterns on both sides attract consumers to compress the cup, and thus promoting people's awareness of waste sorting. Moreover, it is made of biodegradable plastic can degrade faster than traditional beverage cups.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When you have finished drinking in the cup, you can simply take out the straw, open the lid and compress the cup through side folding structure. Then, the compressed patterns will appear. After that, please put it into the appropriate rubbish bin.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been started in January 2022 in Beijing, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The whole cup is made of Biodegradable PLA plastic with a recycled paper straw. The side of the cup is foldable, which allows it to be folded up to a quarter of its original size.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Firstly, several product researches on the material, size, shape and drinking style of the existed milk tea cups has been conducted. Then, a survey of 144 people, aged between 18 and 39, has been organised to analyse the drinking habits and characteristics of the target consumers. The shape of the cup is based on the traditional Chinese paper folding and stretching, and is supported by the Beihang University. Moreover, the material used for the cups is biodegradable.
CHALLENGE: To design the folding function, enormous approaches has been experimented. A number of cup shapes were created, including cylindrical, square, triangular and polygonal shapes, through manual origami and 3D modelling. And the final shape was chosen for its stability, comfortability while using, and unique appearance to attract the attention of consumers.
