| DESIGN NAME: Planet PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ashtray INSPIRATION: My design of a planet-shaped ashtray is inspired by a documentary about space exploration, where planets appear exceptionally bright and appealing in dark space. The idea comes to me that perhaps everyone has a gorgeous planet dream that is mysterious and attractive. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Its most attractive part lies in its changeable color and metal-like texture, a result of using technology negative ion vacuum titanium plating on the ashtray surface, which produces a wonderful visual effect. Different from common ashtrays, this design looks clean and pretty with a hemispherical cover hiding ash and masking the smell of cigarettes. There are three grooves for cigarettes inside the ashtray, capable of holding the two most common kinds of cigarettes. There are three grooves for cigarettes inside the ashtray, two with a diameter of 8 mm and one 6 mm, capable of holding the two most common kinds of cigarettes. Apart from its designed utility, the planet ashtray can also function as a decoration on the table. It also draws attention to the relationship between things and people: maybe we want functional products to be more appealing, more interesting, more fascinating, etc. Such reflection facilitates a new understanding of things we already know. My design process is focused on why to design ashtrays. Many countries are now discouraging smoking, but cigarettes are still being frequently and heavily used in people’s lives, so I decide to redesign ashtrays to make them more interesting. CHALLENGE: In making the product, it is the production stage that faces the biggest challenges, including preventing shape change during pottery firing and mastering relevant techniques to have precise control on colors.
