| DESIGN NAME: Oval Coat PRIMARY FUNCTION: Effortless Motion-Folding Raincoat INSPIRATION: As raincoat users, the team wishes to design what consumers really need, that is, to be able to put away raincoats fast and easily. The Oval All team found out about origami clothing that has specifications such as compacting down to small sizes and being able to design and follow a certain pattern where we could control how and where raindrops expel. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using an origami structure, Oval All designed a raincoat that can be put away by shaking. Origami Raincoat is enhanced in both wearing and putting away processes, it takes less than 15 seconds to put on and less than 20 seconds to put away while it's neatly folded for the next time usage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To put on: worn like a cloak, zip down the zipper from the neck down to knees to close off then put out arms through the sleeves, these are the only two steps when putting on Oval Coat. Taking off : Pull arms back inside, pull zipper upwards to open, take off from the neck and gently shake, the coat will then be stacked into a linear shape that can be easily put away. Through the origami pattern water droplets are left outside, keeping the coat dry so one can wear it right away. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started from September 2020 and ended April 2021 in Tainan, it was exhibited in Tainan on May 2021 and Taoyuan on September 2021. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Origami structure using 100% polyester fabric is used for Oval Coat. By applying the correct amount of heat Oval All were able to change the raincoat structure, minimizing raindrops from coming in contact with the user. The outer layer of Oval Coat is coated with a TPU coating, allowing the surface to have the lotus effect while expelling heat and moisture from the inside. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The raincoat is an L size men's coat, suitable for 170cm-180cm men. The coat length is around 180cm, through the design, the length of Oval Coat ends a little bit above the ankle. Packaging comes with a raincoat, instructions and a portable bag for external use. All products use the same structure of origami motion folding. TAGS: raincoat, origami, motion-folding, put away, fast, effortless RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Oval All had known they would be working with raincoat problems so they started off trying to find alternative solutions, starting with brainstorming then narrowing it down to possible solutions, after diverging and converging the team did questionnaires and surveys to pinpoint the core problem, which was that market raincoats is more of a tool rather than a raincoat for consumer and uses too much effort to put away. Oval All used dozens of origami structures to find one that is easy to produce, keeps users dry all the way, and super easy and fast to use. CHALLENGE: The toughest part was transforming paper origami structures to fabric while keeping the structure performance then to clothing patterns for humans to wear, paper has a much harder memory than fabric, thus using too complicated patterns wouldn't work out, rather than using mechanisms, use structure. NAME: Oval All PROFILE: During rainy seasons, Taiwan faces multiple transportation inconvenience for scooter riders, Oval All as a team wishes to develop something that is easy for consumers to use while keeping fashion. Oval Coat was developed from the basics of origami structures, allowing the user to put on the coat within 10 seconds and put away while folded neatly within 15 seconds changes everything during a rainy day, this brings convenience not only to the user, but to local stores as well, keeping minimum water from entering store floors. Oval All is an origami structure-based team that wishes to bring more practical innovative designs to the market, changing people’s lives using skills that the team has accumulated throughout the years to bring a game changing design. The team has faced tons of problems from how to apply origami features to clothing to the connections of materials used, after numerous consultants with experts from different kinds of fields, the team can finally present the first generation of Oval Coat to everyone. The team has developed a motion shake, which combines the origami structure to the raincoat, therefore, after taking off the coat, all the user has to do is gently dab-shake Oval Coat, it will then fold itself into a long linear shape, which will then be a button away from putting away the raincoat. This cuts down on most of wasted effort compared to traditional raincoat designs which also might get the user wet when taking off the coat. |
