DESIGN NAME: Lava
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handbag
INSPIRATION: The powerful natural spectacle of a volcanic eruption inspired me to design this handbag. When the lava finds its way between volcanic rocks, visually very fascinating images and impressions are created. I wanted to design a handbag that conveys this flowing movement of the lava over the volcanic rock.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This handbag is not meant to be a mass product, but to combine unique design and handcraft to stand for a future in which products have a real value again and no mass consumption is needed.
This design stands out visually due to its three-dimensional shapes and the striking colour combination between black and orange.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With this handbag, the viewing angle is very crucial.
Every new viewing angle changes the design. If the front of the bag is viewed at a very steep angle, a visual world of its own will emerge.
This way, the bag never gets boring either.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in January 2022 in Vienna and ended in February 2022 in Vienna.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I had to find a way to visually convey the flowing movement of lava and the static volcanic rock. So I looked at a lot of pictures of volcanic eruptions and analysed them.
My design ideas also had to work as a handbag. That's why I tried out many different patterns. Then I sewed the bag. This part took the most time because I sewed the bag by hand.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of my handbag was to combine design and craft.
Creating the pattern was definitely a challenge, I had to try a lot of different things until I could turn my design idea into a bag.
