DESIGN NAME: Patterns of Life
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art-Craft and Light Installation
INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind this project became a traditional holiday called "Kupalle", the Belarusian history and culture. These patterns are dedicated to traditional Belarusian embroidery, each one of them symbolizes "Kupalle", Mother and Child. People are used to seeing the patterns very small on pieces of clothing, towels, etc, but here they were enlarged to about 5 meters tall which makes this project so unique.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project "Patterns of Life" was aimed to unite people, make them feel a part of Belarusian culture and be involved in creating this installation. By choosing the symbols of a mother and child, the artist wanted to convey the idea of how important it is to pass on the national traditions of Belarus to future generations. In addition, this installation was aimed to become an additional decoration for the event and a backdrop for taking pictures.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project interaction took place primarily on the initiative of the participants of the festival. Everyone could've created their own drawing/message on a circle and placed it in an area of the pattern. Thus, each participant made a personal contribution to this social art project.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project “Patterns of Life” was installed in July 2016 at the Slutzak Guest House, which is 30 kilometres from Parry Sound town. The installation was espoused for a month. The project video “Patterns of Life” has been projected on a wall at a gallery in Bogota, Columbia at the Oxygen – Fragmented Cities+Identities Festival (from November 19 – December 19, 2016). In January 2017, the “Patterns of Life” video has been shown at the Contemporary Venice Art Show in the Palazzo Flangini, Venice (Italy).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All three patterns were made with cardboard circles that were coloured white and then painted by guests of the festival, including kids. Each structure is 5 meters tall and 2.5 meters long, it was hung on a tree with a linen rope. For the opening, to create a more artistic effect, we used a fog machine in combination with colour spotlights.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project statistics: Circles - 435, Metres of rope - 1,000, Knots - 1,600, Stones - 75, 6 wooden bars, 6 bottles of spray paints, 3 RGB projectors, a fog machine, and art supplies.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before its creation, the author of "Patterns of Life" revised the history of the Kupalle holiday, its traditions, and national characteristics. Additionally, learned about the old costumes and Belarusian embroidery. The embroidery has its own language of symbols and patterns, which was formed a thousand years ago.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this project was actually assembling it. It was challenging to carry parts of it to the right areas and then hang them carefully underneath the trees.
