DESIGN NAME: Unplug
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bedside Lamp
INSPIRATION: In 2020, a close relative of the designer was diagnosed with macular degeneration, a type of eye disorder. This sudden incident triggers the designer to design a product that could protect its user's vision. Inspired by the sunset, the colour temperature of the lamp gets warmer and dimmer as the sphere cover slowly sinks. Slotting in their phones, users can then take part in tech-free activities in the transition period. With the warm ambience that calms users to sleep, it also adapts to their melatonin onset. Allowing them to sleep in serenity and wake up with a restored body.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With screen time in the dark rising as a common behaviour, the population of macular degeneration ( eye disorder ) is getting younger in recent years due to excessive blue light. Rethinking our bedtime routine, Unplug uses our phones as a trigger to activate the lamp’s dimming process, reducing the chance of having blue light and darkness happening at the same place, protecting our sight. It aims to unplug us from the digital world while calming us to sleep.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users can slot their phone in to activate the wind down. As time slowly goes, the light gets warmer in color temperature and dimmer in brightness. Just like the sunset, the light bulb slowly sinks into the base and we are ready to sleep.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2021 and finished in January 2022 in London.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main body is made of Greencast material, a 100% recyclable and recycled raw materials (R-MMA) through casting. The fabric on the top is nylon-spandex fabric that offers elasticity, enabling the sphere casing to move vertically as times goes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Upon discovering a close relative diagnosed with Macular degeneration, I started researching into this eye disease. While it being irreversible, my research is indicating an emerging trend that is truly worrying; Age used to be a prominent factor of AMD. As a daunting discovery in journals and blogs, experts are currently suggesting that the macular degeneration population is getting increasingly young. Awareness disparities in medical-related professionals and the general public is observed, as limited studies accentuates the emergence of the shift aforementioned and their impetus. In response to the potential threat posed to myself and future generations, design should contribute to the prevention of eye disorders as the demand for products that leads to positive societal change arises.
As we delve into the data of screen time usage, it is worrying to see how our compulsive and excessive use of the phone is disrupting our bedtime routine, our well being and physical health. All the above paved way to the design of UNPLUG LAMP.
CHALLENGE: When designing a 'electronic gadget', it is important to put human factors into consideration. In order to ease the stress of habit transformation and encourage positive action, the design of UNPLUG tries to incorporate elements inspired from nature- Something more soothing and calm to watch. Through providing character traits to a bedside lamp, it hopes to offer warmer interaction and removes its artificial sense.
