DESIGN NAME:
Vegvisir

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Medallion

INSPIRATION:
I was fascinated by the ancient Viking mythology. As you know, the Vikings were ancient warriors and sailors. They called their ships "drakars". And for the Vikings, they were very important - vital. It was a galdrastav - a combination of runic signs folded into a single symbol. Galdpaktav - a magical sign with the image of several intertwined runes, which appeared in the early Middle Ages in Iceland. It is considered the least studied section of the magic of the North. The medallion symbolizes the waypoint for its owner.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Vegvisir is a Viking runic compass. In translation, it means "pointer to the path." The complexity of the project was to design a large-sized product, while making it light in weight. For the owner of this pendant, the vegvisir becomes a talisman that makes it easy to make a choice in favor of one or another decision in life. The medallion has become an excellent psychological aid for the owner. Due to jewelry processing, it has become even more mysterious than originally thought.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A 3D model was made according to sketches and drawings, then it was milled on a CNC machine in wax and cast in metal. The medallion is made in the form of a silver pendant with blackening and rhodium plating. The talisman is worn around the neck on a cord made of genuine leather. On top of the medallion there is an eyelet for threading a lace into it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
2021, St. Petersburg, Russia

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
3D modeling, wax milling, metal casting, grinding, polishing, blackening, installation. Silver, rhodium. Leather belt, hardware installation.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
50mm* 58mm* 5mm. Genuine leather cord 600 mm length.

TAGS:
Vegvisir, medallion, talisman, jewelry, 3D modeling

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The main study of the creation was the possibility of creating a brutal men's pendant, conveying the magical atmosphere of the Viking mythology, the combination of different materials and their contrast. Having created a through ornament, it was possible to lighten the product, but at the same time create a stable and reliable design that is difficult to deform when worn.

CHALLENGE:
With a light construction, it was possible to convey the Viking runes and reproduce them in metal. With the help of casting in silver, blackening and rhodium, the decoration turned out to be brutal, courageous and strict. Despite all these qualities, the medallion is light, only 25 grams.
