| DESIGN NAME: Alphabetical Fun PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Toys INSPIRATION: Children products have always been concerns for our society, for better products for children are the prerequisites of their healthy development. Therefore, emotional theories are adopted to demonstrate the relationship between children’s affects and product design. Products which arouse positive emotions can prompt children to learn from playing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Alphabetical Fun (AF) is a set of multifunctional toys for 2 to 6 years old children contains 9 components which can be assembled into 26 letters. With very simple assembling method, it can help children learn English letters while having fun. Alphabetical Fun also encourages them to be more creative, children can play it in innovative ways. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are 9 parts among AF which could be assembled into 26 alphabets. Different colors are designed to improve 2 to 6 years old children’s visual senses. Children can gradually learn knowledge of alphabets with their parents or pals, or simply play them in different ways, as a chair, a desk and anything they want to create. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in November 2021 and finished in January 2022 in Beijing. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each part of AF is manufactured by blow molding. The Material is plastic. Inspired by mortise and tenon joint, different parts could be assembled by inserting. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The maximum length and height reach to 440mm and the width is 60mm. The size is set according to 2 to 6 years old children’s ergonomic data which allows them easy to seat or play. TAGS: Play, Learn, Multifunctional, Creativity, Interaction RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Alphabetical Fun adopts the way of building blocks to help children learn from playing, as the activity is designed to be playful, multiple and inclusive. Children are motivated by the interest in the process, not only by a desire for a certain outcome. There might be learning of text, sensitivities of color, structure and space, enlightenments of creativity, and interaction with others. The achievements of playing AF can be diverse which illustrate the emotional theories that products arousing positive emotions can prompt children to learn from playing. CHALLENGE: Trying to keep the components as simple as possible but also multifunctional when come together. The design of each component could be a challenge considering shapes and joints. It is expected for Alphabetical Fun to have both complexity and challenge, which corresponding to the characters of the 2 to 6 years old children.
