DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Natural Linearity

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Apartment

INSPIRATION:
With the simplicity of minimalist linear design and warmness of wooden furniture, the project aims to shape a cozy and timeless home environment.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is themed on minimalism with linear elements. Under the chilly atmosphere in white, the wavy mouldings adorn the apartment with coherent linear details. The verticality of lines visually extends the ceiling height for a spacious view. Such linearity can be found in all rooms in order to show the consistency. For a warmer decorative highlight, brass is used on the cabinet handles, lights and mirror frame throughout the apartment.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
When entering the flat, the whiteness of the walls and light tone of the wood directly present a comfy atmosphere to the visitor. Instead of using the whole wall in the living room, the panel moulding in a shorter height delivers the linearity in a lighter way. For a sense of being cradled, the panel ends with a curved corner. The curve also enables visitors to see the linear design, which adds depth to the rectangular living room. On the TV wall, soft beams come out from the upper and bottom sides of the panel moulding. With this lighting, the panel appears to be floating and a layering effect is formed.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2021 and finished in December 2021 in Hong Kong.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The panel moulding is tailor-made for achieving the ideal wave. And to apply the same linear design, cabinets and wardrobes are custom-built. In the bedroom, the wooden headboard alters the inward wave into an outward one to enrich the complexity of the linear design.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: 498 sq ft

TAGS:
Minimalism, New Classics, Add Value, Moulding, Linear

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project intends to reinvent the tradition of French classics with modern minimalism, which generates a New Classics style, so as to explore the creation of new meaning through innovations involving craft-based design.

CHALLENGE:
Since there are various kinds of waves with different expressions and effects, the designer had to seek a specific wave pattern to accomplish the ideal design. And in order to achieve that, several trials were done for the panel moulding in the living room.
