DESIGN NAME: Lunar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Lighting
INSPIRATION: When utilized as an interior, designer toys, often known as 'art toys', provide consumers with aesthetic enjoyment but lack utility. Lunar successfully incorporates the designer toy concept into a one-of-a-kind interior lighting collectible. Lunar's form is based on a simple standing posture of a retro cartoon characters, inspired by a wireframe of cartoon character sketches drew with only circles and lines.
Rather than isolating the illumination part from the character, the glowing part of the Lunar's head is used to emulate the concept of glowing lightbulbs as an idea comes to mind.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Most indoor lighting ideas that use the concept of a "cartoon figure" or"art toy" end up with a translucent material that has the exact same shape as the character. Lunar, on the other hand, is a figure born from the concept of 'lighting,'; with its head and body created to function as indoor lighting as well as the aesthetics that come with it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Lunar is as simple to operate as the standard lights we use in our rooms. The main difference is that fashion accessories such as a hat or scarf can be utilized for adornment, allowing you to personalize this character to your liking. Furthermore, a Bluetooth-based wireless lightbulb might be used to change the color of the lights.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2020 in Seoul, Korea and finished in August 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Lunar makes full use of additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing) to construct its curved body shape, which is very hard to do using traditional manufacturing methods such as injection molding. After sanding and painting, the finished product appears to be as seamless as if it were made using high-precision machinery.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: (Width) 260 mm x (Depth) 210 mm x (Height) 500 mm, Weight: 4kg, and use 220 V for the power

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To learn how individuals engaged with Lunar, we employed observation. Users prefer to use a wide hat as a shade to modulate the intensity of a light, and we gave the lighting a unique name to make it feel more friendly and pleasant.
CHALLENGE: The Lunar's large volume, which stood half a meter tall, posed a technical difficulty to build because the entire body was made utilizing additive manufacturing. We were able to produce Lunar in two complete pieces, head and body, using an industrial grade large scale 3D printer, which saved money on post-processing costs.
