DESIGN NAME: Motus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exercise Workstation
INSPIRATION: Especially with the climax of COV-19 pandemics the need and accompanying eagerness to work and exercise outdoors significantly increased. Urban life, however, is dense and very often does not allow urbanites to spare time for relaxation and physical activity apart from times dedicated to work. Inspired by this lack of time and need for fresh air and relaxation this design introduces an urban furniture that enables working, exercising, and taking a fresh breath all at once, while also generating power enough to charge small electric and electronic devices.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Motus is an outdoor exercise workstation. It offers a front table for pedaling laptop users. It also performs as a standing desk for non-cyclers. It generates power through a dynamo. It is unique in the sense that it allows for outdoor working and exercising at the same time while also generating energy enough for charging small electric and electronic devices.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The furniture is proposed as a device through which a safe and effective low-impact motion might be performed. There is an integrated dynamo attached between the pedaling wheel and the front panel which generates electric power. It is capable of delivering 0.5A at 12 V. Further energy is backed up by the urban electric power system. Each furniture connects to a mobile software/platform through a QR code. Through the code, users can easily track their efficacies in energy generation. The software shows readouts for workout time, speed, generated watts and calories burned.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea of designing this urban furniture began in May 2021, and the project finished in December 2021. It does not have any specific location.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Motus is made of bent steel sheet. The steel is later treated with a cycle of sandblasting, cataphoresis, and polyester powder coating. The diagonal slits on the bent sheet operate as vent holes and enable the reduction of wind pressure on surfaces. A dynamo is located in the hub of the spinning wheel. Through the dynamo, 150 watts/h might be produced by an average rider, enough to charge small electric and electronic devices. A power outlet is placed on the wheel cabin.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The seat is 57 cm above the ground for ease of spinning. Sitting areas is 43 x 90 cm. The verge of the seat and the back is 89 cm distanced from the center of the pedalling wheel. (Ideal fit for people between 155cm to 185 cm) The height of the desk is 102 cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: COV19 pandemics significantly altered living, working, and exercising habits. Findings center around the importance of access to fresh air and regular exercising habits. Projections based upon the relevant research highlight means and methods to promote time-spending outdoors. Motus derives its motive from this relevant literature on health-enhancing physical activity and working environments and introduces an interactive urban device that invites urbanites to work, exercise, and enjoy outdoors.
CHALLENGE: One of the major challenges throughout the design process was regarding the co-optimization of bending angles allowed by the material and the bike-seat-desk ergonomics. Another significant challenge was finding the balance among aesthetics, structural balance, and desired sturdiness of the entire design.
